How to Play small to medium pocket pairs in Holdem poker

Various concepts have been made on the right way to play medium and small pocket pairs in Hold'em, but all of them have one thing in common: players often do not know how play these hands well.

These starting hands are complicated in the sense that there is no right or wrong way to play them. It would depend on how many players are in the pot, how many are left to act, their style of play, and it would depend on your status in terms of chips and previous plays. These are just the basics; there are other specific details to be considered while playing.

How to play these pairs

When playing these pairs, the most common mistake is being too aggressive or too laid-back.

These hands have great potential value so it is best to speculate on possible bets. If for example you're playing a multi-way pot against aggressive players, a small pair could be deadly. It is most likely that you would get paid off for having the best hand if you hit a set on the flop.

And since the other players are quite aggressive, they wouldn't expect a small pair and may pay you handsomely.

Medium pocket pairs could be your winning hand if you're playing a no limit hold'em. This would only come about if you isolate an opponent who holds a premium hand that isn't a pair. Players would typically get all their chips in the middle if they hold a big slick or even AJ and AQ. If you challenge these hands, you could marginally get ahead.

It is common for this situation to happen. Both players didn't exactly make a mistake but they both took big risks. Small and medium pairs could easily be defeated by a bigger pair which is why it is important to gauge aggressive and confident players to give you an estimate of the value of the hand they're holding.

In limit games, avoid pushing too hard and avoid folding pre-flop as well. Be cautious and passive while playing and try not to fold at all. The best-case scenario would be if you are in one of those races where you are a slight favorite but you could easily be dominated.

If you have a small pair, a good strategy would be to isolate an opponent when you yourself are in a difficult situation with few options like if you are short-stacked.

The best thing about small and medium pocket pairs is that it makes a good poker player clever and ingenious with his moves. At a short notice, you could change your course of action depending on the progress of the situation at hand. Good poker players rarely make serious mistakes and when they do, it is at a calculated risk that they are willing to take.
